Fenomenal, Rompeforma 1989-1996
documental de
Merián Soto y Viveca Vázquez

Fenomenal, Rompeforma 1989-1996, is a documentary about Rompeforma: Maratón de Baile, Performance & Visuales, the experimental Latinx dance and performance festival took place in Puerto Rico from 1989-1996. Co-directed and produced by Merián Soto and Viveca Vázquez, with editing by Laura Sofía Pérez and music by Eduardo Alegría, Fenomenal, Rompeforma 1989-1996 features dozens of performances and commentary by many current leaders of the field, and some who have sadly passed. In its six incarnations, Rompeforma: Maratón de Baile, Performance, & Visuales presented dozens of performances by over 60 Latinx artists from across the hemisphere. In addition, Rompeforma organized two exhibitions, five theater installations, a performance retrospective of choreographer Petra Bravo’s work, poetry and spoken word events, and dozens of workshops.

Fenomenal intends to inspire younger generations of Latinx artists and cultural activists by providing evidence of the rich creative and artistic contributions of Latinx artists to the American avant-garde. Fenomenal preserves, and makes available the repertoire of a generation of Latinx experimental dance, performance, and curation often overlooked and/or forgotten by historians, scholars, and practitioners in the field.

Fenomenal shares, not only the archives, but also the work that has caused a fundamental legacy in the disciplines of dance and performance in Latin America, USA, Europe, and the Caribbean. This endeavor responds to consistent efforts of strengthening artistic ties, and the affirmation of a community that very often has broken barriers to establish not only a voice, but a community oriented artistic environment that follows the practice, “if you want to get something done, do it yourself.”
